Grow your own Peyote Lophophora williamsii cactus!

Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) is an amazing, small and slow-growing desert cactus that has several active alkaloids, with mescaline being the most well-known. It is against the law to pick the peyote button in the wild! Peyotes are endangered, so let's all do our part to help them by leaving them standing! It's really easy to grow peyote yourself! And in the right conditions, it grows relatively fast.

Cultivation of Peyote

You can plant peyote seeds in September and April. Spread the seeds on the ground and cover them with a thin layer of soil.  Keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate. Seeds will sprout grow in a few weeks. Don't overwater or the roots will rot.

The peyote needs warmth and light, but not direct sunlight. 20-30°C. It needs a dry environment and little attention. The peyote will grow to 10-15 cm in a few years.

Taking care of them

All you need to do is give them a few drops of water every two to three weeks. During the winter months (December to February), they require no water and no artificial light. They won't grow during this period anyway.

Use of Peyote

Eating and chewing the peyote buds is perfectly possible. The peyote's bitter taste makes this rather challenging. Blend them with grapefruit juice. Cut them up and blend them. The best method is to dry them and grind them into a powder. Encapsulate the powder with a capsule machine. It is always difficult to dose correctly when using fresh buttons, as the active ingredient content differs from cactus to cactus. Do not take all the buttons at the same time. Take the first few cacti and wait at least 45 minutes before taking another. Remove the white fluff from the cactus before eating or processing it. The fluff is toxic and can irritate the throat.

The effects

The trip lasts between 5 and 24 hours. It is crucial to keep the day and next day free from appointments. The effects are best enjoyed in nature, where the vision is not obscured by manmade obstacles. The beach or broad fields and plains are ideal environments. The forest is not the ideal place to have them.
